The DC5 2015 – Memorial Weekend Soccer Tournament was held in Bell high school from may 23, 2015 – May 24, 2015 in remembrance of Abel Desalegn and Dawit Berhe, valued former members of the North American Ethiopian Soccer clubs who tragically lost their life on their early age in a separate incident.
During the tournament the players and the soccer community did several activities to honor and remember them. They invited families of both players to be present as guest of honors, they named the tournament in honor of these two souls displaying a big banner that shows both of their pictures for the duration of the two days. Most of the players wore shirts with printed photos of Abel and Dawit. They held a moment of silence to remember and recognize them. On the closing of the tournament, the team that won first prize received the trophy from Abel’s mother, Lebsework, while the second team received from Dewit’s sister.
From what I heard from most of the participants, both Abel and Dawit were wonderful men. People’s persons and outgoing with a great sense of humor. An all-round good people who will forever be remembered and missed by their families and friends. See more pictures of the tournament from the dedicated facebook page of the event.
Finally I would like to recognize the team spirit that the soccer community showed during such difficult times for one of their owns. It is not an easy task to organize such an event and to execute it successfully yet you all did a great job of it. That is what team spirit is all about. And I am certain Abel and Dawit are proud of their team, friends and the community in general. Thank you once again. All of you have been a support helping both family sail through these difficult times.
Truly, you all have displayed immense hard work and team spirit that will remain printed in their families heart. Thank You!
May God bless their soul and make them rest in peace.
